Marisol Cruz and Luna Cruz

Marisol Cruz and Luna Cruz were mother and daughter. Marisol raised Luna with Rafael Cruz in the family’s Hialeah household and remained part of Luna’s adult family life.

Origins and Early Relationship

Luna was born in 2011 as Marisol and Rafael’s younger child. She grew up with her parents and her older brother, Ezra, in Hialeah.

Rafael’s Death and the Family Crisis

Rafael died from an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2022, when Luna was eleven. Luna was aware of Marisol’s grief and worried about adding to it. At the same time, Ezra’s escalating substance use and behavior demanded much of Marisol’s immediate attention.

The distribution of attention and responsibility within the household affected both Marisol and Luna. Luna’s distress was quieter than Ezra’s and remained less visible during the family’s immediate crisis. In therapy, Luna spoke about hearing her mother cry and watching her manage Ezra’s behavior.

Adult Relationship

Marisol and Luna’s relationship continued into Luna’s adulthood. Marisol remained involved in her daughter’s family life.
